Tango: Between Balance and Surrender
Tango, like each of us, has its own axis.
Not only a physical one — the one that holds the body — but also an inner ones: an axis of values, identity, direction. And yes, it moves. Sometimes to the right — toward action, control, ambition. Sometimes to the left — toward feeling, acceptance, surrender. But there is a center. The center is the place where nothing needs to be proven. A place without tension, where you are simply yourself — the “eye of a tornado”, where everything is still. It is the place where the body feels light,
and we feel true.
And when in tango, and in life, two people meet, a third: our axis appears. A shared one. It exists only when neither abandons their own axis, yet both are willing to stop holding only onto themselves. And then something almost miraculous happens:
balance (responsibility) is no longer divided into “yours” and “mine” — it is shared. Perhaps the most important thing is this: the axis becomes stronger when we share it with another. It is a paradox. Because what we call a shared axis can become — and does become — your balance when you loose or no longer have it yourself.
Sometimes we sway. We doubt. We lose balance — physically, emotionally. We take risks. And that is exactly what creates beauty. A tilt of the axis is not a mistake.
It is movement. If your axis is strong, you will always return.
And if you share it with someone… you realize there is no need to return alone, or no need to return at all…
Because tango, like life, is beautiful.
